Glasgows shame - the same old story, same old problem - litter lying everywhere, and far too much of it.
When are people going to realise despite the great, and unappreciated work they do, it's not just down to our bin men road sweepers, our council tax covering the costs, and city council workers generally to clean up our mess......
................................................................................................
It's down to US - JOE PUBLIC - ITS TIME WE ALL FACED UP TO OUR RESPONSIBILITIES, PLAYED OUR PART, AND GET OUR HANDS DIRTY MORE OFTEN.
Just how often do we see people throw their litter down, walk right over, or through litter lying on the ground, even when it's right next to a bin. ? .
...............................................................................................
People aren't stupid, yet when so few of them realise the purpose of a bin, and the implications of throwing their rubbish on the ground or flytipping / dumping their furniture, or electrical goods it's astounding. Bins may well be in short supply, their failure to be emptied is also a problem..... but, not an excuse not to use them.......
................................................................................................
Having covered the whole of Partick on Sunday night after the S.P.L. league decider, armed with litter pickers, and carrier bags, the response I had from the public was varied, but also very much as I'd expected. From people looking at me like I'd two heads, to "Why am I wasting my time" - From praise, and complimentary words, to drunk teenagers derogatory insults, like I wasn't right in the head.....
.............................................................................................
It's just sad that in this day and age so few people care enough about the space beyond their own front door. As if everybody took it upon themselves to keep the area outsie their house, flat, or business clean, and tidy we'd see far less of a problem with rubbish strewn over roads, pavements, ggrass verges, traffic islands, and every piece of ground accross the city.
............................................................................................
If Glasgow is to be cleaned up properly firstly we need far more bins allocated in the local areas.
For both litter and dog fouling.
If "Clean Glasgow" is to continue, and be even more successful we need full, and proper resident and tenant participation, not just interest shown in some parts of the city every now and again. We need to see a change of mindset of people, from one of complete ignorance, and loutish behaviour, disinterest in keeping our city clean, and apathy.
Local pubs, cafes and restaurants, and shops generally must all do far more to keep the area around them cleaner, free of cigarette ends, and with better provision of, and regular emptying of their ashtrays.
If recycling is the way forwards more and better provison of recycling bins in strategic points, like retail parks, and high streets with high volumes of shops must be looked at by G.C.C. Otherwise plastic, glass, cans, and newspapers / magazines will all just end up in landfill sites.
We all have it in us to make small changes - too many of us just don't want to come out of our "comfort zones" and make changes if we feel their being imposed on us. But, really it's not that black and white.
The changes we're making are for the good of the planet, in reducing harmfull CO2 levels, and methane emitted from landfill sites.
The changes we make in keeping our cities, countries, and world cleaner are all for the good of our future generations. People have to see this, as without more effort made by us as individuals we're letting ourselves down as well as our planet.
