24/11/2008Concerns continue over building plans on Hayburn Lane

PLANS to build new houses in Hayburn Lane in Partickhill have caused concerns for residents.

The project, by Imagine Projects Ltd, proposes 12 mews houses with courtyards. Residents were informed by letter on September 12, but are waiting for the application for planning permission.

Eva Bolander, Chairperson of Hayburn Crescent Residents Association, said they have a number of concerns.

She said: “It is one of the few areas of green land in the area which is not a garden. Children use it to build dens and dog walkers use it.

“It is natural land that has never been built on and it is in a conservation area.”

The residents’ association are also concerned about the problems with access to the lane, the loss of trees next to the train line and the loss of privacy.

Ms Bolander said: “If the trees were cut down there would be more noise from the train line as well as the noise made by building work.”

There have been applications for planning permission to build in this area before, including one in 2001. Ms Bolander said: “Residents are getting sick of having to deal with this so many times over the years.”

Green Party Councillor Stuart Clay said: “Because of its proximity to the train line, it is a very inappropriate place to try and build a housing development.

“A better idea would be for the local residents to work with the council to help enhance the piece of land as a natural area, to increase biodiversity there and open it up to local residents to enjoy.”

The area is currently classified as a Conservation Area by the council so wildlife in the area is protected.

Colin McIntyre, Director of Imagine Projects said: “We have been refining our proposals to take in resident’s concerns including doing tree surveys.   We hope to put in the planning application in the next two to three weeks.”

Ms Bolander feels that, after so many planning applications for this area, the land should be re designated in the City Plan as greenspace to make it more difficult for these plans to be made.

I played in this area as a child and many of these areas now have houses built on these sites in Hyndland /Partickhill. It would be such a shame now to have houses built in this lane, taking away this last few tree-lined area which adds to the appeal of living here. Surely we should learn from the mistakes made at Glasgow Harbour, building houses far too close to each other. Greed has taken over!

This area is a conservation area and, therefore, should be left undeveloped, but an additional problem, that no-one seems to be considering, is that most of the buildings adjoining the proposed development are being held together by huge rivets, because of the instability caused by past mining in the area. Any developer, proposing to build in the area of Hayburn Crescent, should be required to show that any development will not adversely affect any existing buildings in the environs.
