Edit Partick's shopping bonanza

THEN
THE Evening Times of February 10, 1956, was unequivocal: Partick's 'Mile of Shopping' was a "must-see", and "Dumbarton Road on a Saturday afternoon is Argyle Street's greatest rival".
It stretched for a mile between Church Street and Crow Road. Buses and the old 'Yellow' tram regularly brought shoppers from other parts of the city
Dumbarton Road was home to Birss of Partick, Catherine's of Partick, Stevenson's flowers, Lawrence of Partick, the Tower Bar, Edward's, Barton's gift shop, the Rosevale Cinema and the West End Cafe.
"Between Church Street and Crow Road, " the paper said, "you can buy ANYTHING - a bedroom suite, a pram, a new suit or a smart blouse, a roll of linoleum . . ."
NOW
DUMBARTON Road is still a popular haunt -and, as was the case in 1956, it attracts custom from much further afield than just the surrounding area.
Catherine's of Partick is still there; where once it sold 'Partick's finest selection of twin sets, jumpers and cardigans, fisher-knits and blouses', it now retails occasion wear, and informal wear by international designers.
One of Glasgow's best-known seafood restaurants, Two Fat Ladies, is also there.
The street also boasts the Three Judges pub, upmarket new housing, green areas, and a clutch of stores and small shops.
We suspect the 1965 line about being able to buy everything here still holds true.
